My Japanese study routine
Today I’d like to share my Japanese language study routine with you. I’ve been studying Japanese for a 6 years now, and I’ve found a routine that works well for me. Of course this routine is something which always changes as time goes on. One month I do this, then I change some parts and continue to follow that kind of a pacing.
If you want to copy this study routine, feel free to do so, but remember that everybody is different and needs extra focus on the parts they struggle with. By example, listening and grammar are the parts I struggle with, whilst Kanji is my most favorite part of studying Japanese and it’s also the part I’m best at.
A ‘Study Routine’ is an ever changing something as your needs will always change, your motivation also need to be tickled every now and then so you can keep going with the full 100%. So changing your routine may be what you need to be motivated again.
Remember that the most important part of studying is to just keep doing it, the moment you start taking breaks, your progress goes down by a lot, even a little bit a day could be sufficient to keep progressing.
My morning routine
My day always starts at around 5 o’clock in the morning. Before I get out of bed, I first finish all my reviews on Memrise. Memrise is a nice app for this as it is fast and convenient to go over everything. After that, I get out of bed, make some coffee and have some cornflakes for breakfast whilst being covered in some blankets. I would watch a quick video during this time, but try to stop watching as soon as breakfast is over. (which can be difficult :p)
After my breakfast, I go over all my reviews in Anki. Most of the time, there aren’t that many and after that, I’m done with reviewing for the day. The rest of the day I’ll mainly be focusing on learning new things or trying to use the knowledge I have in daily life to be interactively reviewing the things I know.
After all the reviewing is done, it’s time for my daily tests that I have to do from my book, “N5 and N4 Practice Questions” from Nihongo Sou Matome. My Nihongo Sou Matome Review. I need to finish this soon before my baby wakes up and takes me out of my concentration (as usually).
My level is higher than N4 but I have started studying from zero again as I found that I had forgotten some basic things in Japanese language. Plus, starting over with studying Japanese is something I quite often do to have a very thorough overview of everything I’ve seen and studied so far. Studying a language should be 10% learning and 90 % reviewing, reviewing is always the most important part of learning in my opinion.
After that book, I’ll be going over to the N3 practice book, then N2 and eventually N1. My plan is to take some real practice tests after finishing these books, so I can see if I’m actually ready for an N2 test or N1 test, which is my goal for the future.
My afternoon and evening routine
For the rest of the day, I will learn some new words through memorize on my PC. I do this at times that I feel like it but I also have a minimum amount that I want to do each day so I can finish this course in a timely manner as there’s still many courses waiting for me to be finished.
That’s basically it
That concludes my overall study routine at this moment. I hope you enjoyed it and found it helpful. This is the routine I’m following at the moment. Like I said in previous videos, I’m taking it easy so I can avoid another burnout.
Good luck studying Japanese!
